Pirate Parents Live

On May 23, the Office of Parent and Family Programs hosted its debut “Pirate Parents Live” session. Facebook Live was used to engage parents and families from across the state and in some cases, out of state. The topic for the initial session was tagged “Welcome to ECU” and gave participants an opportunity to ask questions and get a head start before attending one of the ten New Student and Family Orientation sessions this summer. This initial event had more than 2,600 views in just the first week.

A panel, moderated by Chris Stansbury, brought together this knowledgeable group of campus partners:

• Dr. Steven Asby, Associate Director in the Academic Advising and Support Center
• Aaron Lucier, Director of Housing Operations
• Corrie Schwabrow, Assistant Director in the Office of Student Transitions

• Shydeik Wood, Orientation Assistant and rising Senior in the College of Business

The panel addressed a variety of questions that were submitted by participants including; what to expect at Orientation, how parents can prepare before they arrive, the registration process, and when to expect housing assignments from campus living. Dr. Steven Asby encouraged parents and families to be “undaunted and maximize their opportunity” during Orientation, while Corrie Schwabrow shared that the group of 27 Orientation Assistants are ready to welcome the students and families to the Pirate Nation.

Lavender Launch

The LGBT Resource Office hosted its Sixth Annual Lavender Launch celebration on Thursday, May 4 in the Great Rooms in Mendenhall Student Center. This year’s ceremony, the largest ever, honored 20 undergraduate and graduate students who will complete their studies at ECU in 2017. Mark Rasdorf, Associate Director for the LGBT Resource Office, served as Master of Ceremonies. Wanda Tyler, Director of Intercultural Affairs, and Dr. Virginia Hardy, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, shared opening remarks with an audience of more than 100 family, friends, faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Angela Wells, Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design, delivered the keynote. Wells offered a reflection on her experiences with the Fall 2016 True Colors photo exhibit which was a collaboration between the School of Art and Design and the LGBT Resource Office. She stressed the importance of the partnership, its impact on those involved in its creation, and the far-reaching effect she witnessed among the students in her Art Appreciation class.

This year, the Samantha Hamilton Award for LGBTQA Leadership Excellence honored two students for their work on campus. Avery Trump and Zachary Dale presented the award to Jon Cockerham, President of SAGA (the Sexuality and Gender Alliance) and a committee member with Pledge Purple and the NC Civility Summit. Abby Fallahee and Dr. John Tucker (History) conferred the award to Zachary Dale, whose research into the history of LGBT activism at ECU received Second Place in the Rhem/Schwarzmann Prize.

The Community Impact Award, first presented by the LGBT Resource Office in 2015, recognizes the contributions of faculty, staff, and community members. Dr. Chris Buddo, Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications, and Kate Bukoski, Director of the School of Art and Design, presented the award to the creative team responsible for the True Colors exhibit. The team of nine people received a custom-made award created in the School of Art and Design’s new glass studio in Farmville. Those honored were:

Katie Reynolds and Madison Veasey, graduate assistants for the LGBT Resource Office for 2016/2017, received the award in Lavender Launch 2017crecognition of their significant contributions to the Resource Office. Sabrina Huapaya, Chris Moore, Jessica Soto, and Christy Vang, all student volunteers with the Resource Office, presented the award to Reynolds and Veasey. Each of the students remarked on the impact of the leadership of the Coffee House program provided by Reynolds and Veasey. Average weekly attendance for the informal psychoeducational meeting for students increased by 50% over a year ago and the graduate students successfully nurtured a sense of community by creating an atmosphere of mutual respect, inquiry, and reflection.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the graduates, led by Dr. Erik Kneubuehl, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Involvement and Leadership. Dr. Kneubuehl shared a brief statement about each graduate as they walked across the stage and received a token of appreciation in recognition of their achievements and contributions during their time at ECU.

Career Services – Picture Your Horizons

Career Services hosted the first “Picture Your Horizons” event on May 4 where students were invited to take advantage of free professional headshots and business card printing. During the 3-hour event, 87 students attended with the majority of participants being seniors who were excited to utilize this free service to equip themselves for successfully navigating their career and life after graduation. Information regarding how to effectively create a LinkedIn account, completing the Pirate Employment Survey, and alumni career services were provided in addition to refreshments including Pirate Popcorn. Career Services – Making Assessment Fun!

If you (still) think assessment is boring, then you need to attend a Career Services Assessment Retreat! Staff members became ‘Assessment Geeks’ in the beach-themed retreat held on May 11 at the Eastern Area Health Education Center (Eastern AHEC). The retreat started off with a warm-up by John Stowe, which had us pitching pitchforks, yelling “hay barn” and telling people to “get along little doggie!” Yes…that actually happened.

We then transitioned into a wrap-up of 2016-2017 with a specially crafted assessment version of the Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” hosted by Carol Woodruff. Later, Melissa Allay shared themes that she identified from Career Services’ outcomes from 2011 to present.

After reflecting into the past, I transitioned the group into planning for our 2017-2018 outcomes. Three teams were created based on the CAS Standards for Career Services.
(1) Melissa was the Team Captain for Outcome Team 1 (Realistic Self-Appraisal, Self-Understanding, and Self-Respect).
(2) I was the Team Captain for Outcome Team 2 (Managing Career Development).
(3) Brian Stutz was the Team Captain for Outcome Team 3 (Communicating Effectively).

In addition to coming up with the outcome, each team also came up with two Means of Assessment and two Criterion for Success that was then shared with the entire staff.

The retreat wrapped-up by recognizing Carol Woodruff as the “Assessment ‘Geek’ of the Year” for her continued development in assessment. And Leslie Rogers read “Little Quack” by Lauren Thompson and encouraged her ‘little ducklings’ to continue to do great things on into 2017-2018.

Student Affairs Making Headlines

• The Student Activities Board received the PICA Award (Printing Industry of the Carolinas Award) for “Best in Category for Digital Poster Printing.” The marketing and design that won the award was for the 7:07 Series – Carnival event. The designer of the poster was Janae Brown (former SGA Vice President).
• Lauren Howard, Tara Kermiet, and Dennis McCunney, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement published Purposeful Partnerships: Communication, Collaboration, & Commitment to Community in April 2017 for the NASPA Lead Initiative.
• Dennis McCunney, Tara Kermiet, and Suzannah Lott, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement published Integrative Leadership Learning: The Social Change Model in Action in the Spring 2017 NASPA Newsletter (pages 4-5).
• Dorothea Mack has been promoted to Associate Director of Greek Life.

Healthy PIRATES Grant

Under the guidance of Ainsley Worrell, the Healthy PIRATES program received a $3,000 mini-grant for the 2017-18 academic school year. The grant, received from the University of Tennessee, is intended to fund the USDA grant-funded project Fruved. The goal of the study is to help students manage their weight and live healthier by focusing on three specific areas: improving dietary intake, increasing physical activity and improving overall stress management skills. More information in the future will be sent out about how the grant will be utilized, but this is an exciting moment for the Healthy Pirates!

Transfer Orientation 2017

The first 2-day transfer orientation was held in 2013 with 79 students and 43 family members attending. Since its inception the 2-day transfer orientation has shown consistent growth in attendance. In 2017, 142 students and 108 family members participated in transfer orientation, a 105% increase since 2013. 96% of students completing the orientation survey ranked their overall experience as Excellent or Good. 89% of students ranked their ability to learn new strategies to help them succeed academically as Excellent or Very Good. In like manner, 92% of parents reported that the overall experience was Excellent or Very Good. Parents also reported that they were more confident that their student would be academically successful as a result of orientation.

CLCE welcomes intern from National Association of Campus Activities

Sheree Coote joined the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement as an intern through the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) summer internship program. The NACA Internship Program promotes experiential learning by connecting students with member institutions in higher education, business, and the entertainment industry. Professionals at these institutions offer engaging opportunities for students to gain experience in industry-specific work settings, and in the process, develop valuable skills that can be applied to any professional work setting. Summer internship experiences span up to 12 weeks, from mid-May to August. Sheree is currently a graduate student at Florida International University in the higher education program. She received her undergraduate degree from Florida State University. Over the summer, Sheree will live on campus and work on curriculum design for the Williams Leadership Scholarship Program, ECU Leads, and Alternative Break Experiences. Throughout the summer, Sheree will be interacting with students and representing CLCE at summer orientation. Please welcome Sheree to ECU and the Pirate Nation!

August 20th is a significant day in the lives of our 4,300-plus new students starting at East Carolina University this fall. The Division of Student Affairs will be hosting the New Student Welcome and Convocation starting at 4:30pm, which is followed by the 17th Annual Pirate Palooza at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

You are invited to be a part of one or both events to welcome our new students to the Pirate Nation.

CRW Family Fun Day 2017

Join Campus Recreation & Wellness for an afternoon of family fun at the North Recreational Complex. There will be zip lining (ages 8 and up with closed toed shoes), boating, fitness walk, a treasure hunt, basketball toss, face painting, inflatables, and water activities!

CRW Summer Camp participants get a chance to meet the camp counselors they will be hanging with this summer.

Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Each adult will check in on-site with an ECU 1Card or ID and sign a waiver for themselves and any minor.
