Service and Self-Care
From the Desk of Vice Chancellor Virginia HardyVirginia Hardy18

Hurricane Florence was a destructive and overwhelming storm for much of eastern North Carolina. And while we, at ECU and in Greenville, were spared most of Florence’s wrath, our hearts are heavy for those suffering the loss of homes, cherished belongings and loved ones. Many of our students, staff and faculty (and their families) have faced and will continue to face numerous days, weeks, and maybe years ahead trying to recover and try to find a new normal.I cannot thank you enough for your efforts to serve our campus community as well as Greenville/Pitt County before and after this difficult time.  Over the past two weeks, many SA educators and staff have expended tireless efforts to address the various issues that arose on and off campus related to Hurricane Florence. I remain impressed and encouraged by the selfless commitment from the staff within the Division of Student Affairs. As we prepare to move beyond this storm, realizing we cannot do it alone, we must come together united and stronger.  We prove time and time again that every day, in every way, Pirate Nation is UNDAUNTED.  As a University, we will help our neighbors to the south to recover and rebuild. I encourage you to continue keeping students at the forefront of what we do. Continue finding ways during the next few weeks and throughout the school year to be attentive to the needs of our students and other constituents (faculty, staff, alumni, parents, community partners, visitors, etc.).We spent a significant amount of time at our Divisional Kickoff addressing self-care. Who knew fewer than two weeks later we would be put to the test quite like this? So, I expect you to also pause for a moment to look out for you.  Some of us experienced significant losses. So, take a moment to assess your needs in all of this and know that we are here to help you as well as our students. Thank you again for your commitment to our value of SERVICE. You continue to be “dedicated to serving students and the University community as we contribute to the mission, goals, and values of the University.  We value community and provide opportunities for students to be active and responsible members of the campus and global community.”

Please use the following site to find ways that you can receive help, volunteer to help others, and donate your time to help the community during the recovery process.

Brody White Coat Ceremony
Submitted by Chris Chappell, Central Reservations Office, and Alan Nielson, Campus Recreation and Wellness

The Brody White Coat Ceremony was held in the recreation center of the Health Sciences Student Center on Friday, August 3rd.  The white coat ceremony was the first event of its size to be held on the basketball courts of the recreation facility, and required careful coordination between various ECU and external partners.

The Central Reservations Office worked closely with Brody Office of Student Affairs, Campus Recreation and Wellness, ECU Parking and Transportation, Disability Support Services, Environmental Health & Safety, ECU Grounds, Housekeeping, and other campus areas in order to accommodate more than 500 guests who attended the event on Friday morning.

In order to host the ceremony within the gym facility, the CRO worked with an external company to provide the chairs, staging, floral accents, and pipe and drape, in order to transform the space from a basketball court into a beautiful event space. The set up and break down of the gym facility required thoughtful coordination between the CRO, CRW, and ECU Housekeeping in order to minimize the impact the event had on users of the recreation facility.

The event was a huge success from an internal and external perspective, but could not have been achieved without a huge collaborative effort and a willingness to try something new. The White Coat Ceremony was a great opportunity to showcase the Health Sciences Student Center to this new batch of medical students, and to see what can be achieved when teamwork is put into action.

Greek Life Suite to be Named in Honor of the Little Family
Written by Kristin Zachary, News Services

The Greek Life Suite in the Main Campus Student Center will be named in honor of East Carolina University alumni Kirk and Dasha Little (pictured, right) of Chesapeake, Virginia.

A substantial gift from the Littles will be used to support Greek Life leadership programming, Student Veteran Services, a scholarship for ECU Ambassadors and scholarships for fraternity and sorority members.

In addition, a new fund called the Interfraternal Scholarship will support members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). The Littles are advocates for the NIC and want to recognize membership in NIC organizations.

True Colors: We Are the Change Exhibit

In collaboration with the School of Art and Design, the ECU LGBT Resource Office presents the third annual exhibit in celebration of LGBT History Month. As we prepare to open the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center in January 2019, this year’s focus is “We Are The Change.” The Peel LGBTQ Center will be the largest center of its kind in the UNC system and we asked our participants—students, faculty, and staff—how they impact positive change in our community.

You are invited to join us for the Opening Receptions:

  • October 2nd from 5pm-7pm at the Health Sciences Campus Student Center
  • October 4th from 5pm-7pm at the Mendenhall Student Center
