Black History Month Events
In 2018, several student organizations have partnered with Student Affairs departments and units to create one Black History Month calendar that can be shared uniformly throughout the month. The partnering student groups include, but are not limited to the Black Student Union, the National Council of Negro Women, Student Activities Board, SGA, ASO, CULTURE Board, Thrift Me Pretty and many more. In addition to the common calendar, students have designed a t-shirt that includes the names of key historic figures from ECU, North Carolina and across the country. The shirts will be distributed during the events in February. Lastly, students will be decorating the bulletin board in Mendenhall Student Center, next to the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement office, with photos, quotes and accomplishments of historic figures.
MLK Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’. Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. This year, ECU honored Dr. King’s legacy by serving the local community on January 15th, 2018.

Chancellor’s Leadership Academy
The Chancellor’s Leadership Academy (CLA) is one of the strategic initiatives at ECU focusing on the continuous development of the leadership capacity of our faculty and staff. The Division of Student Affairs has been well represented in the CLA over the years and the 2018 class has numerous Student Affairs educators involved. The CLA offers leadership development to high potential university members through quality curriculum, material and experiences delivered and presented by top-level administrative and academic leaders. The Spring 2018 cohort started January 12th and will conclude on April 11th. Topics include Team Building and Leadership, Leading in Intercultural Environments, Mentoring, Followership, Decision-Making, and Leadership Ethics.

Male Student Success Summit
On January 27th, the Office of Student Transitions hosted 86 students, faculty and staff at the 2018 Male Student Success Summit in Mendenhall Student Center. Dr. Keith Edwards, the keynote speaker, shared research from his dissertation “Putting my man face on: A grounded theory of college men’s gender identity development.“Edwards shared insights from his conversations with ten men and their stories of the consequences of gender performance.
Four breakout sessions followed the keynote focusing on relationship abuse; athletics student development; redefining masculinity; and men making things happen on campus. Dr. Edwards met with faculty and staff to engage in informal conversation on putting ideas into practice.
A resource fair, lunch and afternoon of fun and music followed the breakout sessions. Resource vendors included Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Campus Living (healthy eating), Intercultural Student Affairs, Pirate Academic Success Center, Career Services, Campus Recreation and Wellness, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, and Men’s Warehouse.Journal prompts, video links, TED talks and other opportunities for discussion will be provided weekly for participants as a means of continuing these very important conversations.For more information on the event or future engagement, please contact Dr. Lathan Turner at turnerla@ecu.edu.
What’s the Tea?
The Ledonia Wright Cultural Center encourages you to invite your students to attend “What’s the Tea?”, an open conversation concerning various issues that are prevalent in our society and culture today.
Participants share their different perspectives in a safe, understanding, and mature environment. This weekly series will occur every Tuesday from 4 PM – 5 PM.
On Tuesday, January 30th, the hot topic of discussion was “Social Media: App or Drug”.
The location for all of the events will be the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center gallery in the Bloxton House on main campus. Refreshments will be served.

Student Affairs Making Headlines
Philip A. Bruce will join the Career Services team as Director on February 12. He has worked in higher education for over 12 years with particular expertise in career services, student leadership development and career preparation.
He comes to us from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia where he served four years as director of career services for his alma mater.
Philip is experienced in a variety of career software and content management programs and has considerable experience in generating data reports that cover a variety of internal and external processes.
Philip will report directly to Dr. Virginia Hardy and his office will be in the main office of Career Services located on the corner of 5th and Jarvis. All employees are encouraged to stop by to welcome Phillip to Greenville and to ECU.
- Maurice Jordan, IGCC Family Coordinator, was selected as a presenter for the 2018 At-Risk Youth National Forum in Myrtle Beach, SC sponsored by the National Dropout Prevention Center. His presentation is called “Seeing When the Light is Dim.”
- Jennifer Britt Harrell has been promoted to the Assistant Director of the Central Reservations Office as of December 16, 2017. She will now be the contact for all main campus department events. Chris Chappell will be our main contact for all events on the Health Sciences Campus as well as supervising the Production Services Staff. Teresa Baro will be filling the role as the CRO Coordinator, which Jennifer formerly held before she began her new role. Dena Olo will be supervising Teresa and will still be working with all student organizations.
- Shonda Clemons-Gray and her housekeeping staff have also joined the CRO. Shonda supervises the event assistant staff, which sets up and takes down all the events in MSC, HSC and BSOM, and has always worked closely with the CRO.
Helping Students Struggling with Addiction

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – College is constantly portrayed on social media as a place where you have to drink to have fun.
One group at ECU aims to eliminate addiction on their campus and community through guiding one another through the process.
The party culture is where addiction can start and where the ECU Collegiate Recovery Community or CRC steps in.
The free program is open to not only college students, but all of Eastern North Carolina.
Through the group they will do things such as participate in group discussions, have one-on-one meetings and have sober alternative activities.
The group focuses on 4 main pillars – Maintain sobriety, educate the campus, enhance wellness, and give back to the community.
This spoke levels to one student who is now sober.
“I’m just so blessed to have so many people in this program who have just impacted me so much,” said Paige Neely, a graduate student at ECU.
“I really made my journey through being sober so much easier, I’m currently in graduate school now and that would have never been done if it wasn’t for this program.”
The group is headed to Colorado Friday for a conference.
There they will engage with other collegiate programs to learn how to help more and more people in the community.
Student Government Association distributes $147,000 to students
The Student Government Association provides funding each year to registered student organizations for campus events, conference travel, and supplies. Throughout the Fall 2017 semester, over $147,000 was appropriated to student groups through the SGA Finance and Appropriations Committee. In all, 74 organizations submitted 89 requests for funding.
Graduate and professional organizations submitted 28 funding requests and were awarded $48,716.98. This includes organizations from across campus including the Brody School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine. Undergraduate academic organizations submitted 29 requests and were awarded $55,766.64. In addition to organizations related to undergraduate majors, this category also includes organizations for undergraduate students interested in pursuing graduate study. General interest organizations submitted 32 requests and received $43,434.88. These groups, while made up mostly of undergraduate students, are not directly related to academic study, including club sports, fraternities and sororities, and religious organizations.
Funding for organizations is still available but all requests must be submitted by March 14. To be eligible for funding, an organization must be registered with Student Activities and Organizations, and the organization’s treasurer has to have attended one of this year’s funding workshops which continue to be offered on a regular basis. CLCE Recognized Among Top Ten for Volunteer Hours at Food Bank
The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina (CENC) recognized the top ten volunteer groups which supported the food distribution efforts to individuals, families, children, and seniors who are experiencing food-insecurity throughout the Food Bank CENC’s 34-county service area. Brittanie Frieze, Food Bank CENC, Greenville-New Bern Volunteer Coordinator, (right, front), presented a top volunteer service hours’ certificate of appreciation to staff and student members of the East Carolina University (ECU) Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) and the ECU Homecoming Committee for 876 student volunteer hours provided during fiscal year 2017 at the Food Bank CENC’s Greenville Branch warehouse facilities (beating out UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State).
Through the Homecoming Food Drive and coordination with other campus group activities, the CLCE annually assists in providing needed volunteers to the Greenville Branch to sort, bag, and process thousands of pounds of food for distribution to the Greenville and New Bern Branches’ network of over 200 nonprofit community partner agencies. In addition, during October, 2017, students participating in the ECU Homecoming Food Drive collected 22,312 pounds of food products which provided over 18,000 meals to families living in low-wage, low income households in eastern Carolina.

The Hook is a student-interest, full-color glossy magazine, covering Pirate Life and Pirate Nation. The Hook serves to inform, entertain and enlighten readers about hot topics and trends happening in our community. It is distributed at over 90 locations on and around campus, major hotels, uptown restaurants, and is now a part of Vidant Health’s Physician Recruitment packages.

Volunteer Request: Spring Career Fair
The 2018 Spring Education and Career Fairs are right around the corner and we are asking for your help this semester! This year’s events are being held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 starting at 8:00am and 1pm at the Greenville Convention Center. On that day, nearly 100Schools Districts and 200 general employers will be at the Greenville Convention Center in hopes of recruiting the best and brightest students ECU has to offer. In order to make this day a success, we need 85-100 volunteers to aide in staffing these events in several different capacities throughout the day.
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to support our students as well as meet, network and make a positive impression on employers interested in hiring ECU students.
